LAKE OSWEGO - An 8:30 a.m. start might have slowed the Oregon City girls basketball team down on the scoreboard, but the Pioneers took care of the main objective Thursday in the first round of the Nike Interstate Shootout - they won.

Powered by Johanna Paine's 24 points, Oregon City beat Southridge 58-33 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the 16-team tournament that runs over four days.

The Pioneers improved to 8-0 on the season, with two of the victories over the Skyhawks.

"We had way too many turnovers," Paine said. "It might have been the early start, but we shouldn't let that be a factor.
"But, we got the W, that's what mattered."

Montana Walters added 10 points for the Pioneers.

Kylie Dummer led Southridge with 14 points. The Skyhawks trailed 30-13 at halftime, but outscored the Pioneers 20-18 in the second half.
