The unofficial state championship for college men’s soccer went to the University of Portland Wednesday as the Pilots beat Oregon State 3-1 before more than 1,800 fans at Merlo Field.

Senior Jared vanSchaik earned a penalty kick and dealt out an assist in the span of two minutes of the first half and No. 19 Portland defeated the lone other NCAA Div. I program in the state in what was officially an exhibition game.

Conner Barbaree converted the penalty kick in the 13th minute and Ryan Luke converted a nifty centering pass into a 2-0 lead in the 14th minute.

Portland added a goal in the 70th minute off the foot of Steven Evans for a 3-0 edge.

Oregon State got its score from Robrto Farfan off a rare free kick inside the penalty box.

Neither Oregon or Portland State feature men’s soccer in their athletic programs.

Portland plays again Sept. 3 against Northern Illinois during the Nike Portland Invitational.

OSU plays again Sept. 1 against the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
