Hawks cool down over weekend

Portland's hot streak ends with back-to-back losses in Spokane
Jan. 22, 2012

The hottest team in the Western Hockey League, the Portland Winterhawks, stumbled for the first time in more than five weeks with a rare two-game skid.

Portland, which had won 10 of its previous 11 games, lost a pair of lopsided decisions in Spokane Saturday and Sunday and returned home still trailing Tri-City by six points in the US Division standings.

The Hawks, who lost 5-2 and then 6-1, play host to Everett at Memorial Coliseum Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Portland enters Tuesday's game at 30-14-2-1, 63 points, with Tri-City leading the division at 34-11-0-1, 69 points.

Everett is fifth in the division at 10-28-1-8, 29 points.

Portland lost three road games before beating the Americans in Spokane, Dec. 17, which started a six-game win streak. After a road loss at Vancouver, B.C., the Hawks ripped off four more wins heading to Spokane.

Goalie Mac Carruth, named goaltender of the week on Tuesday, gave up five goals on 33 shots Saturday, and five goals on 19 shots Sunday before being replaced by Brendan Burke in the second period.

CARRUTH EARNS GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK AWARD

Jan. 18, 2012

Portland will head into a stretch of four road games in a week against US Division rivals with the top goalkeeper in the CHL, Mac Carruth.

Carruth, who recorded 95 saves and gave up just three goals in three wins last week, was named the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week Tuesday. He becomes the 15th goaltender to be named to the award in the 16 weeks CHL teams have been in action. Only one goalie, Malcolm Subban of the Belleville Bulls of Ontario, Canada, has received the award twice.

Portland begins its road stretch, which also includes a home game Tuesday against Everett, Saturday at Spokane.

The Hawks are busy chasing Tri-City for the division lead with a 30-12-2-1 record for 63 points, which is tied for third in the WHL overall. Tri-City leads the WHL at 34-10-0-0, 68 points.

Following a 5-1 win over Tri-City Monday, Portland is 1-5 against the Americans this season with three games between the teams left before the 72-game regular season schedule ends, March 18.

Winterhawks keep pressure on US leaders

Portland's four-game win streak has them second in division
Jan. 1, 2012

Portland's drive to win a second consecutive U.S. Division title is still in gear as the team headed into 2012.

The Winterhawks won their final four games of 2011 and trailed Tri-City by seven points after 38 of 72 regular season games.

Portland headed into a home game with Moose Jaw at 24-11-2-1, 51 points, which put them in third place in the Western Conference. Tri-City led the division and conference at 29-7-0-0, 58 points and had won their last 10 games of the year. The Americans led the league in goals allowed, having given up just 85 goals.

Portland led the league in goals scored with 163.

The Winterhawks play four of their first five game of the year at home.

Portland is 0-4 against Tri-City, with the next game against the Americans set for Jan. 16 at the Rose Garden.

Hawks will have full line-up for holidays

Forward Ty Rattie just misses a spot on Canada's Junior National Team
By Cliff Pfenning, oregonsports.com

Portland's leading scorer, Ty Rattie, will be with the team throughoug December after Canada announced its roster for the upcoming World Junior Championships.

Rattie was one of 42 players invited to try out for the 22-roster spots. Six players from the Western Hockey League received a spot on the roster that will play in Calgary and Edmonton during the tournament, Dec. 26-Jan. 5.

Brandon's Mark Stone, who leads the WHL in scoring, did receive a spot on the team.

Canada won the silver medal last year.

Team Canada includes two players currently on NHL rosters: Brett Connally of Tampa Bay, and Devante Smith-Pelley of Anaheim, and will be coached by Don Hay of the Vancouver Giants.

Rattie has a league-high 32 goals in 32 games and 27 assists for 59 points. Stone has 27 goals and 38 assists for 65 points. Portland's Sven Bartschi is fifth in the league in scoring with 12 goals and 42 assists.

The Winterhawks (20-11-2-1, 43 points) are third in the Western Conference behind Tri-City and Kamloops as they head for the mid-point of the season.

Portland plays at Spokane (14-9-2-3, 33 points) Saturday before returning to Portland for a four-game homestand that takes them into 2012.

Hawks shoot way to opening win

After banner raised, Portland beats Everett 3-2 in a shootout
By Cliff Pfenning, oregonsports.com

The Portland Winterhawks celebrated their run to the Western Hockey League final by raising a banner Friday, then thrilled home fans with an exciting 3-2 win in a shootout over Everett in the opening game for both teams at the Rose Garden.

Defender Derrick Pouliot scored the lone goal of the shootout on the Hawks third and final try, just before Portland goaltender Mac Carruth stopped Everett's third try that set off a spirited celebration in front of a crowd of 6,342 for the Hawks.

"It felt good to get the season going again," said Carruth, the Hawks main goalie from a year ago. "We've got high hopes for this team, maybe even higher than last year."

Taylor Peters, fresh from training camp with the Minnesota Wild, and rookie Nic Petan, fresh from bantam league play scored for Portland, which plays at Seattle Saturday and at Tri-City Sunday.

Hawks return to top of the league

For a team that three years earlier finished with the worst record in the Western Hockey League, the turnaround for the Portland Winterhawks was amazing as they reached the league championship series before losing just three wins short of the Memorial Cup.

Portland finished atop the Western Conference with 103 points, then blazed through playoff series with Everett, Kelowna and Spokane before losing to Kootenay of Cranbrook, B.C., four games to one.

Portland won 50 of its 72 regular-season games. The Hawks struggled in the middle of the season thanks to having the core of its team play in international tournaments. The Hawks swept Everett in the first round of the playoffs.

The Calgary Hitmen finished at the bottom of the WHL with 45 points. Portland finished at the bottom of the league in 2008 with 25 points, one year after scoring just 37 poitns.

The Hawks have played in the Cup four times - 1982, '83, '86 and '98, winning the title in '83 and '98, both years the team played host to the tournament. Portland has won the WHL title just twice - 1982 and '98. It advanced to the Cup in '83 as the host team and again in '86 as the runner-up to Kamloops, which played host to the Cup.

Portland, the top seed in the West, has the home-ice edge and will meet the B.C. Division winners at 7 p.m. at the Rose Garden after beating Everett 4-0 in its first-round series.

Kelowna beat Prince George 4-0 in its first-round series.

Portland finished the regular season at 50-19-0-3, 103 points, while Kelowna finished 43-28-0-1, 87 points. Portland won three of four games with the Rockets during the regular season.

Game 2 is set for Sunday at 5 p.m., also at the Rose Garden.

Tri-City and Spokane face off in the other conference semifinal.

The semifinals in the Eastern Conference have yet to be set as one series has reached a sixth game.

WHL WESTERN CONFERENCE PLAYOFFS

QUARTERFINALS

PORTLAND 4, EVERETT 0

After finishing the regular season with a 9-1 edge in games against the Silvertips, the Hawks cruised through four games to move into the conference semifinals.

Portland scored three times in the opening 10 minutes and trailed just twice in the series. The Hawks won Game 1, 5-0; Game 2, 7-2; Game 3, 5-4; and Game 4, 6-2.

Nino Niederreitter scored 10 points, putting him tied for the league lead for points in a first-round series.

HAWKS HEAD FOR PLAYOFFS WITH PLENTY OF CONFIDENCE

The Portland Winterhawks, champions of the Western Conference during the regular season, begin their assault on the same notation, only during the playoff season Saturday night when they play host to the Everett Silvertips in the first round of the Western Hockey League playoffs.

In the playoffs, though, the Hawks have two extra rounds they can play into past the Western Conference - the WHL final, and the Memorial Cup.

The game begins at 7 p.m. at the Rose Garden.

The Hawks posted the Western Conference's best record (50-19-0-3, 103 points) and are the top seed in the playoffs, giving them home-ice advantage in every playoff series - all of which are best-of-seven. Portland finished as one of the hottest teams in the league with eight wins in its final 10 games.

Everett enters the playoffs having gone 28-33-7-4, 67 points, during the regular season, but finished 1-7-2-0 in its final 10 games.

Portland beat Everett in nine of the 10 meetings between the teams this season.

HAWKS 4, EVERETT 3, Friday, March 18

By Jeremy Lloyd, oregonsports.com

Either you’re first, or you’re third. Sounds like something Ricky Bobby might say in the movie “Talladega Nights,” doesn’t it? But with just two games remaining in the WHL regular season, that’s exactly the scenario the Portland Winterhawks face after squeaking by the Everett Silvertips by a score of 4-3 Friday in an exciting and splendidly violent affair at the Rose Garden.

Nino Niederreiter scored two goals for the Hawks, including the game winner, while Riley Boychuk and Sven Bartschi also found the back of the net for the home team.

Portland, which currently maintains a razor thin one-point lead over the Spokane Chiefs in the U.S. Division of the WHL’s Western Conference, will travel to Seattle Saturday and then host Spokane Sunday at home in what could possibly be a winner-takes-all matchup for first place in the conference. Kelowna, which already wrapped up the B.C. Division, is guaranteed the number two seed in the conference, which means the Hawks will finish either first or third. Spokane, for their part, kept the drama alive by knocking off Seattle 5-0.

Heading into the third period down 3-2, however, Portland’s tenuous first place status was on thin ice. Bartschi knotted the score at 3-3 on a rebound goal at the 18:18 mark of the period, and Portland withstood back-to-back Everett power plays to set up a furious finish to a game that was too important for the Winterhawks to lose.

“They had a chance to take the lead, but we had great penalty kills, and that changed the momentum big time for us,” said Boychuck after the game.

Following over 15 minutes of nail-biting scoreless hockey as the tension built with the dwindling game clock, Niederreiter flicked in a wide open shot from the left corner with just 3:08 remaining that would turn out to be the game winner. The Silvertips would mount a desperate attack in the final minutes in an attempt to tie it up, but Portland goalie Marc Carruth stood his ground and made several impressive saves to seal the deal.

"It was a play that we had run a lot during the season," said Niederreiter of his game winning goal. "I had a clear shot at the net, and I was able to make it."

Things got chippy from the moment the first puck dropped, as the Silvertips clearly weren’t content to be just another speed bump on the Winterhawks’ road to a top seed in the Western Conference playoffs. Two first period skirmishes were quickly squashed by the refs, but a third resulted in a Mike Tyson-style one-punch knockout when Boychuk laid out Everett’s Ryan Harrison flat on the ice.

“I like to crash and bang," admitted Boychuck. "A more physical type of game is my game.”

As would be expected, that physical play led to a good deal of four-on-four hockey early on thanks to a laundry list of penalties, but surprisingly none of it resulted in a score, as neither team could find the back of the net despite a combined 19 shots on goal, 14 of which came from the Hawks.

The second period featured considerably less violence but more scoring, as Everett jumped out to a 3-2 lead despite getting only 16 shots on goal for the game thus far compared to Portland’s 33. Brennan Yadlowski broke the scoring seal for the Silvertips with a power play goal at the 18:04 mark, then Ryan Murray put Everett up 2-0 with a breakaway one-on-one score with 13:20 showing on the clock. The Winterhawks would respond less than 14 seconds later, as Boychuck showed that his hand hadn’t been too badly damaged on Harrison’s face by finding the back of the net in traffic to make it 2-1. Niederreiter slipped another one past Everett goalie Andy Desautels at the 7:40 mark to square up the score at 2-2, but Chad Suer’s 20-foot prayer was tipped into the net by Josh Birkholz to give the Silvertips a one goal advantage and put Portland’s tenuous division lead in peril heading into the final period.

Portland will face off with Seattle Saturday night at 7:05 pm, followed by the much-anticipated season-ending bout with Spokane Sunday at 5:00 pm at the Rose Garden.

Portland keeps pace with Spokane with 5-3 win

Winterhawks and quick-draw Chiefs continue toward Sunday's duel
Staff Report

The Portland Winterhawks (48-18-0-3) scored goals on their first three shots of the game en route to a 5-3 win over the visiting Vancouver Giants (33-31-1-4, 99 points) in a Western Hockey League game before 7,133 fans Wednesday at the Rose Garden.

The win gives the Winterhawks 99 points on the season, as they remain first in the Western Conference, one point ahead of the Spokane Chiefs (46-17-4-2, 98 points), who beat Chilliwack 2-1 in a shootout Wednesday. The Chiefs fired off 79 shots in the game, causing Chilliwack goaltender Lucas Gore to make 78 saves before missing both shootout attempts.

Portland and Vancouver combined for 62 shots on goal.

Spokane and Portland, both play twice before meeting Sunday at the Rose Garden in the regular-season finale for both teams.

The Winterhawks opened the scoring against Vancouver just 55 seconds into the game on a goal by defenseman Troy Rutkowski, then made it 2-0 at the 5:36 mark on the 38th goal of the season by Ryan Johansen, after which Vancouver replaced starting netminder Mark Segal with Brendan Jensen.

Just under three minutes following Johansen’s goal, the Winterhawks scored their third goal on their third shot of the game when Seth Swenson beat Jensen for his third goal of the season, giving the Hawks a 3-0 lead they’d take into the second period.

Portland kept up the pressure in the second period, with Brad Ross scoring 3:31 into the period with a goal at the doorstep, his 30th of the season, to make it 4-0.

But the Giants fought back and scored three straight to get back into the game. They got on the board at the 4:26 mark when Nathan Burns scored on a wraparound, then scored again at the 13:12 mark when a shot by James Henry got through a crowd and past Portland goaltender Keith Hamilton to make it 4-2. The Giants pulled to within one at the 17:21 mark when Greg Lamoureux scored off a faceoff to cut the Hawks’ lead 4-3 going into the third period.

The game remained tight through the third period, and at the 14:20 mark Riley Boychuk scored a highlight-reel goal when the puck came to him in the crease and he scored with a between-the-legs shot to give the Hawks a 5-3 lead, a score that would stand as the final.

The Winterhawks will close out the regular season with three games in three nights this weekend, beginning Friday at home at the Rose Garden against the Everett Silvertips at 7 p.m. followed by a road game Saturday in Seattle. They finish up Sunday at home against Spokane in a game that could decide first overall in the Western Conference at 5 p.m. at the Rose Garden.

Winterhawks roll through Vancouver, 5-0

Ross scores twice and Hamilton blanks the Giants

A night after tallying a hat trick, Brad Ross scored twice and the Portland Winterhawks cruised past Vancouver 5-0 Saturday in Western Hockey League action.

Goaltender Keith Hamilton stopped all 29 shots he faced in front of a crowd of 7,868 at Pacific Coliseum.

Nino Neiderreiter and Ryan Johansen also scored - the 35th goal for each - and Portland kept pace with Spokane in the Western Conference standings in the race for the regular season title.

WINTERHAWKS DOMINATE THUNDERBIRDS, 9-1

Ross and Niederreiter get hat tricks as Portland pounds Seattle on Mascot Night

By Jeremy Lloyd, oregonsports.com

It may have been mascot night at the Rose Garden, but the only people horsing around on the ice were wearing furry, detachable heads. The Portland Winterhawks, on the other hand, were all business, jumping out to an early 3-0 lead in the first period en route to an 9-1 victory over the cellar-dwelling Seattle Thunderbirds Friday in front of a sold-out crowd of 10,947 frenzied fans.

It was a one-sided offensive onslaught from the moment the first puck dropped, and the Winterhawks remained the aggressor throughout, peppering the Thunderbird goalies with a variety of up close and personal forays to the net on their way to an impressive 58-20 advantage in shots on goal.

Brad Ross and Nino Niederreiter led the Portland charge with three goals a piece, while Ryan Johansen contributed four assists. Luke Lockhart got the lone score for Seattle, which didn’t come until less than 10 minutes remaining in the game.

The win helped the Hawks (44-17, 91 points) maintain their razor-thin three-point lead over the Spokane Chiefs (41-17, 88 points) in the WHL’s U.S. Division with just eight games remaining in the regular season. The winner of the U.S. Division is practically a lock to get the #1 seed in the Western Conference playoffs, while the second place team in the division will have to settle for the #3 overall seed in the conference. Spokane took care of business as well on Friday, defeating Prince George 5-4.

Seattle took the ice without leading scorer Burke Gallimore, while Portland was without the services of their fourth leading scorer, Ty Rattie. The Winterhawks will hit the road for their next four games before returning to the friendly confines of the Rose Garden on March 16th to take on the Vancouver Giants.

Game Flow

Period 1
Ross hit paydirt on two rebound goals early in the first period to set the tone for the Winterhawks, and then Craig Cunningham squeaked another puck past Seattle goalie Calvin Pickard as Portland jumped out to a decisive 3-0 lead. The advantage was due in part to a barrage of shots at the Seattle net that resulted in a 22-6 shots on goal advantage for the period. Pickard did an admirable job with 19 saves, but it wasn’t enough to stop the leaking dam that was the Thunderbird defense.

Period 2
The offensive bombardment continued for the Hawks in the second, who again got off more than twice as many shots on goal as Seattle at 20-9. Pickard did the best he could, turning away several point-blank Portland attempts to add to his save total. But in the end it was two deep attempts from Troy Rutkowski and Niederreiter that found the back of the net to make it 5-0 Portland.

Period 3
Seattle sent a new goalie in Michael Salmon out on the ice to start the third period, but the results were the same despite the fact that Portland played their fourth line for a good portion of the period.  Ross cemented his hat trick early in the period, Niederreiter collected two garbage-time goals to do the same, and Jason Trott found the back of the net with just 21.2 seconds remaining to make the final score 9-1. The only question mark heading into the final period was who would get into a fight. That finally happened in the final minutes of the game, as Portland’s Tyler Wotherspoon got into it with Seattle’s Travis Toomey. The conflict resulted in a few love taps before both men fell into the Portland net.

Portland enters home stretch against pesky Thunderbirds
Staff Report

Darth Vader may not be a mascot for a capitalist product, but he still looks cool on the ice - and he'll be on the ice Friday for the Portland Winterhawks annual Mascot Night.

The Winterhawks play Seattle at 7 p.m. Between periods, mascots will face off in a broomball exhibition.

Portland enters the game with the best record in the Western Conference, 47-17-0-3, 89 points, but is just three points ahead of Spokane, 40-17-4-2, 86 points. Those teams meet on the final day of the regular season, March 20, in Portland.

Portland 6, Tri-City 5

The Portland Winterhawks got two goals and two assists from Nino Niederreiter and helf off a fierce rally for a 6-5 win over the Tri-City Americans Tuesday at the Toyota Center in Kennewick, Wash.

Neiderreiter scored goals 30 and 31 in the second period as the Hawks built a 6-1 lead and then held on to improve to 43-17-0-3, 89 points and moved three points ahead of Spokane (40-17-4-2, 86 points) in the battle for the Western Conference title. Each team has nine games left in the regular season.

Swen Bartschi scored his 30th goal of the season and had three assists for the Hawks,

Tri-City, which produced a 49-35 edge in shots on goal, dropped to 37-21-2-2, 78 points.

Portland plays host to Seattle Friday at the Rose Garden. The Hawks close the regular season against Spokane at the Rose Garden, March 20. Portland (262 goals) and Spokane (271) are the highest-scoring teams in the West.
