The ghost of Bill Schonely showed up at the Chiles Center Thursday night for the Class 6A boys basketball state tournament, and hovered over the Mountainside High bench as the final second ran out of a double-overtime clash with Barlow.
"You've got to make your free throws," is one of the most revered lines coined by Schonely in his days as radio broadcaster for the Portland Trail Blazers.
The Mavericks missed them. Barlow didn't.
The result was a 73-72 win for the Bruins, who advanced to a semifinal meeting with revenge-minded Tualatin Friday night. Barlow's girls team beat Tualatin on Wednesday night in the quarterfinal of that half of the tournament.
In the other games of the boys tournament, top-ranked West Linn beat Central Catholic 49-45, No. 4 Lincoln edged Gresham 60-59 and No. 3 Tualatin beat Beaverton 63-54.
Barlow made three of their final four free-throw attempts, while Mountainside made just one of four.
