Portland Legion champs reach World Series semis

After winning the Northwest Regional, the Portland Barburs reach the final four in the Series event

SHELBY, N.C. - The Portland Barburs legion baseball team narrowly missed hitting their way to a World Series title, reaching the semifinals of the national tournament before falling to eventual champions Chesapeake, Vir., Monday, Aug. 18.

After scoring an average of more than 10 runs per game in six regional tournament games, the Oregon champions averaged 12 runs per game in three Series games to reach the semifinals. The Barburs - based out of Southwest Portland high schools - went into the bottom of the sixth inning of its semifinal game tied at 2 with Chesapeake when the home team broke out for five runs and eventually won 7-3.

Chesapeake beat League City, Texas the following day for the Series title.

Portland lost 7-6 to League City earlier in the tournament.

The Barburs won the Northwest Regional in Billings, Mont., with five consecutive wins after losing their opening game. In those five wins, they averaged 12 runs per game.
