Prep sports begin to come into view

High school sports is a work in progress ... beginning soon

The fall season for high school sports is headed for "dead week" which means training camp and the likely heat it brings with it are soon to be upon Oregon fields and gyms.

The Oregon School Activities Association season begins with a week where coaches and athletes are required to rest - apart from one another. That week is July 27-August 2. (Then, all hell breaks loose.)

Schools will be competing in football, volleyball, cross country and soccer. Some larger schools also compete in water polo, which is not sanctioned by the OSAA.

The first state championships are set for Nov. 8, when boys and girls individual and team finals will be decided in cross country at Lane Community College in Eugene.

Volleyball playoffs begin Oct. 28-29 with tournaments in all six classifications set for Nov. 7-8.

Soccer playoffs are set to begin Nov. 1 with championship matches on Nov. 15.

Playoffs begin for football Nov. 7-8 with title games set for Nov. 28-29.

Water polo playoff scheduling has not been posted online.
