It's been more than a week since the Portland Bangers hit the headlines nationally after their first game in professional soccer, but they aren't the only game in town using Northeast Portland's former Concordia University field. They're just the ones the public seems waiting for due to their mascot, Saucy, who caught the attention of comedy writers across the nation following their season-opening game, May 15.
Saucy got written into comedy sketches up to "Late Night with Steven Colbert" following the event, which the team lost 3-0 to Bigfoot FC of Maple Valley, Wash., in the USL-2 division.
Actually, the former Concordia University field, which is now owned by the University of Oregon and goes by UO-Portland, will host the Oregon Steel of the Ultimate Frisbee Association on Saturday, one night after Saucy and the Bangers play host to their USL-2 soccer match.
The Bangers play host to FC Olympia at 7 p.m. Friday, while the Steel play host to the Salt Lake Shred at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
Saucy is likely to overshadow other sports events this week, too, such as the first women's home soccer match of the year in USL-W. Lane United is playing host to Bigfoot FC at Civic Park Wednesday in Eugene looking for its first win.
Lane United is the lone USL-W team in the state.
